我會想要走書店這一行嗎?整體而言──儘管僱主對我很好,我在店裡也過了一些快樂的日子──不想。

歐威爾不願以賣書為業,原因可想而知。書店老闆給人一種毫無耐心、容忍度低、不愛交際的刻板印象──迪倫.莫蘭(Dylan Moran)在影集《布萊克書店》(Black Books)中實在扮演得太完美了──再者(整體來說)這似乎也是事實。例外當然會有,而且許多書店老闆都不符合這種類型。遺憾的是,我符合。但我並非向來如此,在買下那間店之前,我記得自己是個耳根子軟又相當親切的人。我會變成這副德性,是因為不斷受到無聊問題的轟炸,生意的財務狀況極不穩定,而且還要跟員工以及沒完沒了、煩死人不償命、討價還價的顧客陷入永無止境的爭執。我能改變什麼嗎?不行。
我在十八歲第一次見到威格頓書店(The Book Shop in Wigtown),當時我在家鄉,正要離開上大學。我清楚記得曾跟一位朋友走路經過那裡,我還說自己確信它在當年就會倒閉。十二年後,我在聖誕假期回去看父母,打電話問他們店裡有沒有里歐.沃姆斯利(Leo Walmsley)的《三度狂熱》(Three Fevers),而我在跟老闆談話時,向他坦承了我很難找到喜歡的工作。由於他非常想退休,所以提議我買下他的店。我告訴他我沒錢,結果他回答:「你不需要錢啊──你以為銀行是幹嘛的?」不到一年後,在我三十九歲生日一個月後(一天不差剛剛好)的二○○一年十一月一日,那個地方就變成我的了。我接手之前其實應該要先讀過喬治.歐威爾於一九三六年出版的作品才對。《書店記憶》時至今日仍然能夠跟以前一樣反映現實,而且對像我一樣天真踏進販賣二手書世界的人是種善意提醒,讓我們知道那並不是坐在扶手椅上,旁邊有熊熊的火堆,而你穿著拖鞋蹺起腳,一邊抽菸斗一邊讀吉朋(Gibbon)的《羅馬帝國衰亡史》(The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire),同時也有可愛的客人絡繹不絕,跟你的對話內容很有見地,最後還留下一大筆現金。實際上,真正的情況可是天差地遠。在那篇文章的觀察中,歐威爾這段評論可能是最貼切的:「許多來找我們的人到哪裡都是討厭鬼,但他們在書店卻有了特別的機會。」
一九三四至一九三六年間,歐威爾正在寫作《讓葉蘭在風中飛舞》(Keepthe Aspidistra Flying)時,曾經在漢普斯特德(Hampstead)的「愛書人角落」(Booklover’s Corner)兼職工作。他的朋友強.金奇(Jon Kimche)描述他看起來似乎很討厭賣東西給任何人──許多書商想必都很熟悉這種情緒。為了說明今日與歐威爾當時的書店生活有什麼相似──以及經常會有的相異之處──本書中每個月一開始都會先摘錄《書店記憶》裡的一段話。我童年時期的威格頓(Wigtown)是個忙碌的地方。我和兩個妹妹在距離鎮上大約一哩遠的一座小農場長大,跟農場單調、散布著綿羊與鹽澤的景色比較起來,鎮上對我們來說就像一座繁榮的大都市。那裡的人口數不到一千,位於加洛韋(Galloway),就在被人遺忘的蘇格蘭西南方角落。威格頓的景觀是在半島上一片波動起伏的鼓丘,稱為馬查爾斯(Machars,來自蓋爾語中的machair一詞,意思是肥沃、地勢低矮的草原),包含了四十哩的海岸線,從沙灘到高聳的懸崖再到洞穴什麼都有。北邊有加洛韋丘陵(Galloway Hills),是一片幾乎無人的美麗荒野,南高地之路(Southern Upland Way)則從中蜿蜒穿過。鎮上由鎮公所治理,那是一棟像市政廳的壯觀建築,曾為當地人所謂「郡」(The Shire)的行政總部。威格頓的經濟有好多年都是由一家乳品合作社和蘇格蘭最南方的威士忌酒廠布萊德納克(Bladnoch)維持,占了工作人口的一大部分。當時,農業提供給農場工人的工作機會比今日還多,所以在鎮上及附近都有受僱者。乳品廠於一九八九年關閉,少了一百四十三個工作;而一八一七年建立的酒廠則在一九九三年停業。鎮上受到影響而有了巨大轉變。原本那裡有一間小五金店、一間蔬果店、一間禮品店、一間鞋店、一間糖果店、一間旅店,現在全部都關門大吉了。
不過目前那裡已經恢復了一定程度的繁榮,情況也還算樂觀。乳品廠空著的建築慢慢做起了小生意:一位鐵匠、一間錄音室和一位火爐匠現在占用了大部分的空間。酒廠在二○○○年重新開業,從事小規模的生產,並由來自北愛爾蘭的一位商人雷蒙.阿姆斯壯(Raymond Armstrong)熱心照料。威格頓的經濟也好轉起來,現在還是一群書店與書商的據點。原本用木板封住的門窗又再度開放,裡頭的小生意則是興隆發展。
曾經在書店工作的每一個人都認為顧客互動可以拿來寫書的題材實在太多了──珍.坎貝爾(Jen Campbell)的《書店怪問》(Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops)就足以證明──因此,記憶極差的我開始寫下店裡發生的事當成備忘錄(aide-mémoire),也許未來我寫東西的時候會派上用場。如果開始的日期看起來很隨意,那是因為本來就這樣。我只是剛好在二月五日想到要開始這麼做,後來備忘錄就變成了日記。
