作者柯靈烏為英國牛津大學教授，專研哲學與歷史，本書即為一部歷史哲學的論文集。柯靈烏自希臘望羅馬史學一直討論到近代史學，其中對西方歷代歷史哲學家如笛卡兒、席勒、康德、費希特、黑格爾、謝林、湯恩比、史賓格勒、柏格森、克羅齊等人的學說皆有論述批評，縱橫古今，極為廣博。　　柯靈烏於西元1943年去世，本書原著由T. M. Knox自柯氏手稿中編選輯成，出版以來極得學術界好評。
